In Exodus 30:22-33 we are told about the holy anointing oil, originally crafted to consecrate the Tabernacle furnishings, and to anoint Aaron and his sons for God’s service—consecrating them “that they may minister to Me as priests.”
Generations later, Jesus Himself may have smelled the fragrant aroma of this oil when He would visit the Temple in Jerusalem. In fact, myrrh—one of the gifts brought to Jesus after His birth—was an ingredient in that beautiful oil.
“And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.”—Matthew 2:11
“…the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ‘Also take for yourself quality spices—five hundred shekels of liquid myrrh, half as much sweet-smelling cinnamon (two hundred and fifty shekels), two hundred and fifty shekels of sweet-smelling cane, five hundred shekels of cassia, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil. And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment compounded according to the art of the perfumer. It shall be a holy anointing oil.’”—Exodus 30:22-25
In the early days of the creation of this holy anointing oil, only specific people could have contact with it. Anyone who disobeyed by making it without authorization or putting it upon any unauthorized person—Jewish or non-Jewish—would be cast off from his people.
So, why would we craft such an oil? Why would we seemingly go against the Word and not only create the oil for use outside the Temple, but for use on non-Jewish persons? It is not as if sourcing myrrh or many of the other ingredients in this day and age is easy, let alone going through the intensive process of preparing this ancient, holy oil. Yet, there are many reasons why we do, and why it does not actually have us—or any who use it—going against the Word of God.
What does Exodus 30 say about the holy anointing oil and why do we—at My Olive Tree—believe WE—God’s kings and priests—can use it today?
By reading Exodus 30:22-33, we can see why there is hesitation in using the holy anointing oil today…
“With it you shall anoint the tabernacle of meeting and the ark of the Testimony; the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense; the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver and its base. You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them must be holy. And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister to Me as priests.
“And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. It shall not be poured on man’s flesh; nor shall you make any other like it, according to its composition. It is holy, and it shall be holy to you. Whoever compounds any like it, or whoever puts any of it on an outsider, shall be cut off from his people.’”—Exodus 30:26-33
It is because of passages regarding being “cut off from his people” that we receive many questions about the holy anointing oil we refer to as “The King’s Oil,” and whether or not its use should be forbidden today.
In The Complete Jewish Bible, Exodus 30:33 reads, “Whoever makes any like it or uses it on any unauthorized person is to be cut off from his people.” In this version, the term “unauthorized” can be understood, in the Hebraic sense, as simply, those who are not kings and priests.
Given this translation—which is likely closer to the original text—we, being kings and priests according to Revelation 1:6, are therefore authorized to craft and use the holy anointing oil… meaning, that we will not be cut off. Further, due to its use for anointing priests in the Word, it begins to become clear that there are times for us to use it, even today.
The instructions regarding this oil were put in place to protect the priesthood, of which we now belong due to the Blood of Jesus grafting us in, and the prophetic Word of Revelation 1:5-6…
“… To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”
How was the oil used and why use it today?
In ancient times, this oil was used to anoint priests and kings—consecrating them for the call of God upon their lives. It was also applied to consecrate certain furniture and vessels used in the Tabernacle. It is a strong smelling oil, beautifully fragrant, with the heavenly aroma lingering in the air.
A priest who had been anointed would potentially carry the scent of the holy oil for days. The dark color and grainy nature of the spices—including cinnamon and myrrh among many others—would leave a visible sign of the anointing. And thus, the anointed would not soon forget their surrender to God in the days or nights to come.
The oil also acts as a ‘yoke-breaker,’ for as Isaiah 10:27 says, “It shall come to pass in that day that his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil.” (emphasis added)
Jesus destroyed the yoke of iniquity and has made us kings and priests—or as the Greek text translates in Revelation 1:6, “a kingdom of priests.” By His Blood, He has brought us into alignment with Him.
Therefore, we are God’s kings and priests on the earth. We, like the priests of old are meant to surrender to God, be set apart, consecrated and holy before Him. And, just as they would be anointed to God as they surrendered to His call on their lives, the holy anointing oil is used for that same purpose today.

We, as Believers in Yeshua, Jesus, have been called as priests in God’s Kingdom.
We are divinely loved and created to become a habitation for the Spirit of God!
“Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?”—1 Corinthians 3:16
The God who created everything dwells in us. Just think about that for a moment… just contemplate the wonder that is God living in US!
We ARE qualified to utilize such things as the holy anointing oil; yet, with such great authority comes great responsibility, and this authority should not to be taken lightly. The King’s Oil is the same Exodus 30 anointing oil, the holy oil which should not be abused or used to anoint man’s appointments—even though we now have access to it.
Yet, when we use it as a Kingdom priest in Yeshua—using it for God’s appointments—we use The King’s Oil without fear. We use it to break the chains of bondage and to outwardly signify our inner surrender to God’s holy purpose as we move forward in God’s restoration of all things.
