Are You Actually Using Extra Virgin Olive Oil?

By My Olive Tree | October 2, 2014

Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Take a walk down the grocery aisle where you can find olive oil and you’ll notice rows upon rows of oils labeled “extra virgin.” Most people purchase extra virgin oil for its health benefits and purity.

However, you might be surprised to learn that a lot of the extra virgin olive oil sold in grocery stores and other retail locations is not actually extra virgin. And that’s not the

“I will bring back the captives of My people Israel; they shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and drink wine from them; they shall also make gardens and eat fruit from them.” —Amos 9:14

only deception—a lot of olive oil that companies claim to be “made in Italy” is not actually made in Italy, either! These findings come from a recent study published in the New York Times, which shed some light on the misleading nature of olive oil labels.

A lot of times, what you see labeled as “extra virgin olive oil made in Italy” was actually Spanish and North African olive oil that was shipped to Italy for further production. There, the oil gets cut with beta carotene and soybean oil, and slapped with an “extra virgin” tag and a label that says “made in Italy.”

The fact that this olive oil adds those extra ingredients in additional production phases means it’s not extra virgin olive oil, the purest form of olive oil. The New York Times study actually suggests that approximately 69 percent of the olive oil sold in the United States as “extra virgin olive oil” has actually been doctored to some extend and does not meet the extra virgin designation.
