California and Israel Connection

California has been facing serious drought conditions over the last few years. The crisis is so serious that on May 5th, the governor issued a statewide water use reduction decree:

“With emergency drought conditions persisting throughout California, the State Water Resources Control Board adopted an emergency regulation requiring an immediate 25 percent reduction in overall potable urban water use statewide…”

Israel is very familiar with drought situations, and has used technology to expand their green line—a process of moving gardens and foliage south into the desert—to help reverse this problem.

According to recent news reports, Israel is trying to help the state of California relieve their drought. USA Today published the article Israel to California: Here’s how to save water:

“’Israel no longer has a water shortage,’ said Uri Shani, a Hebrew University professor and former director of the Israel Water Authority.

“Israel and California have cooperated on water issues for years, but mostly ‘on a grass-roots level,’ said Yoram Cohen, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at UCLA-Los Angeles. ‘Now it's time to collaborate on commercial water technology projects that can benefit both countries.’”
