Unlike a lot of other types of trees, olive trees do not need a special form of fertilizer to be able to grow and thrive. Instead, results will be significantly better simply by following a good nutrition regimen.
If the trees are planted after mid-August and before March 1, it’s better to wait until spring to fertilize (though because our groves are located in warmer areas, we can be the exception to this rule). Otherwise, fertilization begins immediately after planting and occurs regularly throughout the growing season. How regularly depends on the type of fertilizer being used. For best results, fertilizers with a nitrogen analysis of 10 percent or more are recommended.
Types of fertilizers commonly used for olive tree growth include:
• Fast-release fertilizers. These fertilizers often contain minor elements and are generally the most widely available forms of fertilizer. When using this fertilizer, you should water the 
• Liquid fertilizers. While liquid fertilizers can be used and produce decent results for olive trees, they’re generally not recommended because of the fleeting nature of liquid feeding. It must be repeated quite often, which would eat up a lot of time growers could spend on other aspects of plant care.
• Organically derived fertilizers. While these types of fertilizers are more expensive and might not contain the percentage of nitrogen often preferred by olive trees, they are widely available and still produce decent results.
Whatever type of fertilizer the grower uses, it is generally a good idea to feed lightly but often throughout the growing season. Heavy applications of fast-release fertilizer could actually damage the plant or run off into groundwater. If you follow the instructions on the label of the fertilizer you should be fine.
