The King's Valley is located in the northern portion of what is geographically known as the Kidron Valley, and just east of the Old City of Jerusalem. It is one of the most sacred grounds in Israel. The valley is a divide between the Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives. The Kidron Valley extends north thirty-five kilometers, dropping drastically in elevation until it reaches the Dead Sea. Many events in the Bible took place in this area.
The valley between Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives was once deeper than what it is today. There were also seasonal streams that flowed through it. This deep wet valley served as a great defensive border for King David and his city. During the Second Temple period a high bridge connected the Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives. This bridge is no longer there but many other monuments still stand triumphantly such as, the Pillar of Absalom, and the Memorial Pillar.
Followers of different faiths make pilgrimages to this area to take in all the fascinating historical sites. One of these sites is the Mount of Olives. The Mount of Olives sits on a mountain peak located across from the Temple Mount and was once covered in olive trees. There are still many olive trees there today, and also tombs of many ancient kings. The Garden of Gethsemane is the site where Jesus was captured before His crucifixion. On the eastern slope is the village of Bethany where Jesus would often find refuge, and is believed to be the place where He ascended to Heaven.
