Why Would a Christian Use Anointing Oil?

Anointing oil and holy water

Though many Christians aren’t privy to the ancient mystery of the holy anointing oil, there has been a recent uncovering and restoration of this timeless practice. Christians today are using anointing oil in spiritual warfare… but what makes the King’s Oil—the anointing oil described in Exodus 30—so unique?

Before we explore this remarkable spiritual tool, let’s uncover its history, meaning, and uses from the beginning.

Anointing oil has been used among the people of God since ancient times. Because it was used in the Old Testament, many Christians today dismiss its significance—not fully understanding the depth and power this supernatural tool holds. And many aren’t aware of its use or reference in the early church either.

Anointing oil in the Old Testament

In the Old Testament, anointing oil is mentioned a number of times as a way to consecrate priests. This oil was to be a mark that set them apart to the Lord, and its use on anyone else was strictly forbidden.

“And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment compounded according to the art of the perfumer. It shall be a holy anointing oil. With it you shall anoint the tabernacle of meeting and the ark of the Testimony; the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense; the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver and its base. You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them must be holy. And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister to Me as priests.

“And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. It shall not be poured on man’s flesh; nor shall you make any other like it, according to its composition. It is holy, and it shall be holy to you. Whoever compounds any like it, or whoever puts any of it on an outsider, shall be cut off from his people.’”—Exodus 30: 25-33

“Cut off”—this sounds severe, but what does it mean? God clearly didn’t want just anyone using this oil. Only those who belonged to Him had the authority.

The Lord provided instruction for applying this sacred compound. It wasn’t to be used frivolously or senselessly, but very intentionally—for priests.

Did you know, according to the Bible, you are a priest when you accept Jesus as your Savior?

“For He testifies: ‘You are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.’”—Hebrews 7:17

Because of Christ’s righteousness that He clothes us in, we are adopted as sons and daughters. We are coheirs, kings, and priests!

Now we know why we can use it—because we are priests. However, you might be trying to reconcile in your mind the seemingly contradictory statement that says it’s not to be reproduced…

The mystery revealed

What many don’t know is that this oil was to be handled only by the priests so that no other king would be raised up to a place in their lives that was rightfully the Lord’s. It was a mark that they were God’s people—chosen and holy. And He would forever be their King.

This is why the Holy Spirit is often described as “anointing oil” throughout the Bible. Because when you are anointed with the Holy Spirit, you are set apart and will forever will be reminded of your King!

“But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things.”—1 John 2:20

So far, we’ve learned…

This leads us to why and how to use the anointing oil.

Why use anointing oil?

This question deserves a more in-depth explanation than merely saying it’s used in spiritual warfare. You must understand why it has power and how it fits into God’s plan. After all, anything we do is to be done for the glory of God (see 1 Corinthians 10:31)—so how does anointing oil fit in?

Biblical prophecy

Biblical prophecy clearly states that there will be a restoration of all things.

This “restoration” is not a quick process, but a gradual one put in motion by the Lord. He is waking up the Church today so Believers can see how restoration is taking place all around them. Restoration and a rediscovery of the Bride of Christ’s roots.
